Located in an industrial park in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chesterfieldtwp.org\">Chesterfield, Michigan<\/a>, it is a voluminous, warehouse-type space jammed packed not only with vehicles, but also period organs, juke boxes, gas station paraphernalia, neon signs, and automotive artifacts stuffed every available nook and cranny. Automotive advertisements hang from the rafters, and organ music blares from any one of the ornate instruments situated along the perimeter. As a personal collection of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stahlsauto.com\/ted-stahl\/\">Ted Stahl<\/a>, the museum reflects the interests and particular proclivities of its owner. As noted on the museum website, Stahl\u2019s mission for the collection is \u2018to build an appreciation for history;&#8217; that of his wife Mary is \u2018to see the smiles on the faces of our visitors.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/chrislezotte.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/organ-768x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1445\" width=\"409\" height=\"545\" srcset=\"http:\/\/chrislezotte.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/organ-768x1024.jpeg 768w, http:\/\/chrislezotte.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/organ-225x300.jpeg 225w, http:\/\/chrislezotte.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/organ.jpeg 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 409px) 100vw, 409px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The museum is only open to the public Tuesday afternoons and the first Saturday of each month. Not surprisingly, it was quite crowded when I visited on a pleasant day in early April. Parents maneuvered small children through aisles of tightly packed cars while grey-haired guides answered questions and offered historical background. Younger volunteers cheerly took organ tune requests from the public. The atmosphere in Stahl\u2019s can only be described as carnival like, a \u2018fun house\u2019 of a museum as it were.&nbsp;More than a mere collection of cars, Stahl&#8217;s refers to itself as \u2018An American Auto Experience.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/chrislezotte.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/terrapane-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1448\" width=\"358\" height=\"476\" srcset=\"http:\/\/chrislezotte.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/terrapane-1.jpeg 720w, http:\/\/chrislezotte.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/terrapane-1-225x300.jpeg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 358px) 100vw, 358px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>That being said, Stahl\u2019s car collection is quite impressive. It leans toward the vintage and brass eras, which no doubt reflects the owner&#8217;s predilection to bright, shiny, and over-the-top objects. Many of the cars display signage from past Concours shows, which, to the auto aficionado, serves as an indication of automotive importance and value. Stahl\u2019s prides itself on its accumulation of \u2018some of the world\u2019s most rare and distinctive cars\u2019 and \u2018treasures from the past you won\u2019t find anywhere else.\u2019 The gigantic and fantastic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stahlsauto.com\/music-machines\/\">music machines<\/a> that boisterously fill the halls; the ornamented and embellished <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stahlsauto.com\/automobile-collection\/\">brass cars<\/a> that reflect images of all who pass; the flashing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stahlsauto.com\/gas-pumps-signs-memorabilia\/\">roadside signage<\/a> that cover the walls and hang from the ceiling; the outrageous movie cars in period displays; and the 50s automobiles parked around a drive in diner all contribute to a unique and often overwhelming experience.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/chrislezotte.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/rosie-2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1453\" width=\"297\" height=\"528\" srcset=\"http:\/\/chrislezotte.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/rosie-2.jpeg 360w, http:\/\/chrislezotte.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/rosie-2-169x300.jpeg 169w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 297px) 100vw, 297px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>While Mary Stahl\u2019s name appears next to her husband\u2019s on a number of automotive displays as an owner, women\u2019s representation in the museum is minimal and somewhat predictable. Women\u2019s preference for electric cars; Amelia Earhart\u2019s promotion of the 1936 <a href=\"https:\/\/macsmotorcitygarage.com\/the-cars-of-amelia-earhart\/\">Terraplane<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/group-media.mercedes-benz.com\/marsMediaSite\/en\/instance\/ko\/August-1888-Bertha-Benz-takes-worlds-first-long-distance-trip-in-an-automobile.xhtml?oid=9361401\">Bertha Benz<\/a>\u2019s famous road trip; and the custom built automobile of the wealthy Madame Lucienne Benitez-Rexach of France are the only mentions of female automotive involvement. Female imagery is limited to a &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/topics\/world-war-ii\/rosie-the-riveter\">Rosie the Riveter<\/a>&#8216; poster on the gas station wall [next to the rest room] and a couple of female mannequins in the diner display. As Stahl\u2019s is, in fact, the vision of one male individual with very specific and unique automotive and mechanical interests, it is not surprising that representation of women as automotive drivers, users, and influencers are absent in other than the most unsurprising and unimaginative ways.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/chrislezotte.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/benzjpeg-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1450\" width=\"514\" height=\"407\" srcset=\"http:\/\/chrislezotte.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/benzjpeg-1.jpeg 720w, http:\/\/chrislezotte.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/benzjpeg-1-300x238.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 514px) 100vw, 514px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Auto enthusiasts looking for a fun and unique afternoon will surely enjoy time spent at Stahl\u2019s. As the museum mission is \u2018to educate, motivate, and inspire young people with a passion and appreciation for vintage vehicles,\u2019 the staff at Stahl&#8217;s endeavors to make the experience memorable and fun for all family members.
